Pregnancy modifications for students

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities including academic, educational, extracurricular, athletic, and other programs or activities of schools. This prohibition includes discrimination against students who are pregnant or are experiencing pregnancy-related conditions, which include:

  • Pregnancy
  • Childbirth
  • Miscarriage
  • Termination of a pregnancy
  • Recovery from any of the above conditions
  • Lactation

Students who are pregnant, or have a pregnancy-related condition, may request reasonable modifications necessary to enable them to continue to participate in their education program or activity.

The College retains the right to request medical documentation when it would be required of students with other medical conditions under similar circumstances. Pregnancy and related conditions are treated similarly as temporary disabilities, where the Title IX Coordinator verifies the medical needs of the student and works with the academic program or other College officials to offer reasonable modifications so the student can participate in her education.

Sufficient medical information must be provided by a licensed healthcare provider to enable the Title IX Coordinator to reasonably determine the nature, date, time and duration of any medically necessary functional pregnancy-related absence, need or limitation. The student may need to sign a medical release with her healthcare provider in order for the Title IX Coordinator to obtain this information. In the event that documentation is requested, the Title IX Coordinator is responsible for requesting documentation from pregnant students.

Three private lactation rooms are available for students to use. Nursing mothers can request a code to gain access to a lactation room.

Title IX also prohibits harassment and retaliation

Title IX prohibits harassment of students based on sex, including harassment because of pregnancy or related conditions.

Title IX prohibits retaliation against a student for exercising rights granted by Title IX.

Grievance procedure

Students who believe they have experienced sex discrimination, including pregnancy discrimination, may make a complaint by contacting the Title IX Coordinator at titleix@epmf.net.
